How do we know that our pet is sick and what should we do then ?!
Healthy dog looks and behaves in normal way it means it is active according to his temperament it has good appetite, it has shiny fur and expressive and clean eyes. The aim and duty of the owner is keeping his pet in good health and in good condition. A dog is an animal which orginally lived in flocks and its mentally features are adapted to live in a flock. Living in human family it treats it like pack of dogs, in which it can find a place for itself. When something starts a trouble it, its instinct of being herd creature, tells it not to boast its trouble, because the flock doesn't like sick one and may drive it out. In that situation till its adaptation possibilities of its organism allow it to suffer, a dog doesn't show us symptoms of illness. That's why, at first it is very difficult for a new owner to diagnose a disease of the pet. Dog should be attentively observed and if something changes in its appearance and behaviour you should go to the vet. It's better to do it two times too much then one too little!!! The more so because it's easier to cure the disease in its first stadium (acute) then the disease is in the chronic stadium. When the dog is as sick that its organism can't overcome the disease and the regulating mechanism also doesn't work, then it can appear clinical symptoms, which help the vet to diagnose most of the diseases, because the dog can't speak and the owner must say everything about the dog and the disease.
There are some basic symptoms of diseases:
Diarrhoea - it can be caused by bacterial or virus infection, invasion of parasites, inappropriate food (also eating snow or food from a fridge) and all those things cause disturbance of biological balance in entrails and it leads to the inflammation of mucous membrane of entrails. Excrement then maybe loose, thin, mucoid, with blood etc. Diarrhoea is very dangerous for organism and can lead to drain, which couldn't be belittled especially when vomiting come together with diarrhoea.
Vomiting (emesis) - occasional, they are not always the symptom of disease, they can happen to animal, which eat too fast and too much. Repeating vomiting it is a very dangerous state of health, which can be caused by infections disease, poisoning or deglutition foreign substance. Vomiting lead to serious distempers in organism especially when diarrhoea comes together with vomiting, then the animal must be cured intensively professionally.
Fever - it signals us the fight of the organism against virus or bacterial infection or inflammatory. It is danger state for the organism and it must be cured. External symptoms of fever are: dejection, no appetite, weakness, sometimes dry and hot nose and the body is wormer as always. The normal dog's or cat's body temperature is between 38,0oC and 39,0oC. Subfebrile state is when temperature is above 39,0oC to 39,3oC, above 39,3oC it is fever. Fever above 41,7oC - state of agony. Temperature below 37,5oC - hyphotermia - is also harmful to health and it requires the consultation of vet.
"Sledging" - it means pain or prurigo (itch) in the area of anus during constipation, having living worms, allergy, inflammation of anal sacs, sticking the foreign substance in the area of anus, e.g. blade of grass or corn. Necessary is visiting the vet.
Shaking head - it tells us about otitis based against a background of allergy or infection (pussy), ear full of pathological ear-wax, sticking the foreign substance in acoustic duct, e.g. blade of grass or corn. Necessary is professional medical examination and veterinary curing.
Laming - it may be caused by contusion, dislocation, inflammation, worn out (wasted) joint, broken bone, injury, sprained tendon or muscle and even insufficiency of circulatory system and by diseases of old age like: rheumatism and paralysis. Necessary is medical examination.
Cough (tussis) and sneezing - they are symptoms of cold, pharyngitis, laryngitis, but also sticking the foreign substance in nasopharynx or irritation of allergic factors (pollen) and irritant gases, e.g. combustion gases.
Unpleasant odour from mouth - it may tells us about advanced tartar, damaged teeth, inflamation or periodontium (paradentitis) and gingivitis and also about defective nourishment (diet) or gastritis or catarrh of oesophagus. Your pet should be taken to a vet.
Tubers, hypodermic and intradermic swellings - they can be building benign or malignant tumours or abscesses and atheromas. It is necessary to go to a vet.
Clawing and gnawing out - it can be caused by skin's allergy, e.g. on insects - fleas bites, or by eczema and it requires long lasting curing.
The best thing is that the sick pet is always examined and cured by the same vet, because he knows it better and it is easier for him to diagnose well. That's why we shouldn't change the vet, if we trust him. The most difficult thing is to cure pets which "visit" all veterinary policlinics in the nearest area, because most often they have been given almost every "medical inventions". Our pet's vet should become our "family vet", but it doesn't means that he comes to our house. Vets prefer to examine animals at their own clinic, accompanied by professional assistant, with suitable medical equipment and with suitable assortment of medicines (which weren't be taken away in enough number), where animals are more well-regulated and they are a little-bit intimidated, than in its own house, where the animal rather feels safely and confident. The same as our "human" doctors, vets don't like when we make a diagnosis ourselves and on our own we take the medicines, also vets don't like diagnosis of the owner and giving medicines to the pet, because it may be turned out, that they are very dangerous for the animal (some medicines which are good tolerated by people, but the same medicine given to a pet may caused very hard disease and even death). Veterinary doctors estimate the most, precise (exact) description symptoms' disease and the origin of it. And remember: We have to say in behalf of our dog!
